Welcome to WORK!

Welcome to the inaugural edition of MDG’s monthly e-zine WORK. Each issue will focus on strategic branding issues, conceptual thinking and various topics of interest to advertising and marketing types. Combine that with a few fun features and some blatant self-promotion and you have yourself one great read.

Our goal is to educate and entertain. Feel free to send us your comments, questions, inspirations, ideas, or whatever floats your boat. We’d love to hear from you!

Tag Lines 101

Today’s consumer is over stimulated with technology and information. Blackberries, cell phones, and instant messaging have stretched our minds to the limit. The result is information over-load.

So how do you communicate your message in this over-complicated marketplace? Keep it simple. Think about it. Most people can’t figure out how to work a DVD player let alone interpret a complex marketing message. The human mind naturally resists that which is confusing, and welcomes that which is simple. We all just want to push a button and watch it work (think Staples easy button).

In his book The New Positioning, Jack Trout demonstrates that the most powerful taglines/campaigns are those that have been pared down to a single word.

Prego: Thick
Volvo: Safety
Crest: Cavities
Verizon: Network

The lesson is not to try and tell your entire story. Just focus on one powerful attribute and drive into the minds of your consumer.

A few key points:

• Eliminate anything that others can claim.
• Forget anything that requires complex analysis.
• Embrace the obvious. Obvious ideas tend to be the most powerful because they’re obvious to the consumer.

Lucky 13

MDG recently worked with LA Director Leo Zahn and National Boston to create a 15 second spot for Stride Rite’s SuperBall 13. The new shoe has full foot SuperBall Technology with 13 SuperBalls in the outsole of the shoe providing more flexibility and bounce. Check it out.

And the Award Goes to...

Our work for the New Balance women’s view book scored a spot in the How Client Promotions Award Annual while our own self-promotional brochure was featured in Print Magazine’s Regional Design Annual. Hey, we hate to brag but our mom’s thought you might want to know.
